Replay: Li Guoqiang (Université Paris Nanterre)

Li Guoqiang, who holds a PhD in historical ethnobiology and specialises in ‘human-nature-culture’ interactions in ancient China, presented a paper entitled ‘The Phenological Foundation, the Calendar and Correlative Thinking in Ancient China’. This research explores the question of phenology – the study of the influence of climatic variations on certain periodic phenomena in plant life – in ancient China, and more specifically in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River, from the mythical Xia dynasty through to the first two imperial dynasties, the Xin (221–207 BC) and the Han (206 BC–220 AD).
