Aesop’s Fables in Asia: Ancient Legacies and Fables from Around the World
International symposium, 25 September 2026, Institute of Civilisations at the Collège de France, François Héritier Room.
The conference brings together researchers from a variety of backgrounds to examine the dissemination, influence, adaptations and transformations of Aesop’s fables in Asia, from the Near East to Vietnam and China, via the Silk Roads and India. The conference will therefore examine the circulation of the fable genre as practised by Aesop, the rewritings of Aesopian texts and their parallels with texts from Asian traditions (India, China, etc.), and the genre’s legacy in other artistic forms (painting, media). The conference is organised by Jingjing Han, a postdoctoral researcher at the GPR PSL Fabriques de l’antique, with the support of the CRCAO and the École Pratique des Hautes Études.
