« À vos tablettes ! From Memphis to Babylon: Going to school in Egypt and the East »

International scientific conference open to the general public, 18–19 September 2026, in the Michel-Ange Room at the École du Louvre.

The conference, which is open to the general public, brings together international specialists to offer a series of comparative perspectives on the various aspects of education in two major cultural regions of the ancient Near East: Mesopotamia in the broad sense and Egypt.

The following topics will therefore be covered: the physical resources and tools used in learning; the institutional and domestic frameworks of learning; teachers and pupils in terms of their sociological context and their practical interactions; pedagogy, the subjects taught and the curricula.

The event is organised jointly by the École Pratique des Hautes Études-PSL (EPHE), the PSL research programme ‘Les fabriques de l’antique’ (FAn), the Louvre’s Department of Egyptian Antiquities (DAE) and the Louvre’s Department of Oriental Antiquities (DAO).
