Call for applications – Autumn School: ‘Argos-Athens: Urban Fabric of Antiquity’ (18–24 October 2026)
The GPR PSL FAn is organising an autumn school in Argos and Athens in collaboration with the French School of Athens.
Introduction to the Autumn School
The PSL Major Research Programme (GPR) “Les fabriques de l’antique” (FAn) is organising its Autumn School in Argos and Athens, Greece, from 18 to 24 October 2026, in collaboration with the French School of Athens.
This intensive “Autumn School” is aimed at PhD students enrolled in PSL’s ED 127, ED 472 and ED 540 programmes. With fieldwork centred on the theme “Argos – Athens: urban fabric of antiquity”, it offers a unique immersion at the heart of the FAn project’s central questions: how do societies, both ancient and modern, construct their experiences
of time and their representations of antiquity?
The cities of Argos and Athens will provide participants with exemplary cases of urban stratification over the long term. The programme will combine presentations by field specialists, site and museum visits, lectures and discussion workshops.
Scientific committee: Guillaume Biard (EFA), Clara Deshayes-Labelle (EPHE-PSL), Vincent Eltschinger (EPHE-PSL), Vassa Kontouma (EPHE-PSL), Jean-Charles Moretti (IRAA-CNRS), Anne Pariente (EFA), François Quantin (EPHE-PSL), Gilles de Rapper (EFA), Andreas Stauder (EPHE-PSL).
Organisation
To facilitate comparative discussions, the Autumn School is open to all PhD students whose research falls within the thematic areas of the FAn programme and is not restricted to Hellenists and/or archaeologists.
Most presentations and discussions will be in French, but a sufficient command of English is required to participate in certain exchanges with non-French-speaking specialists.
Registration for the Autumn School is free of charge. The FAn programme and the École française d’Athènes will cover students’ travel from Paris to Athens and Argos, accommodation for six nights, and some meals.
Successful candidates will undertake to participate in the entire Autumn School, which will run from the morning of Sunday 18 October 2026 (departure from Paris by plane to Athens) to Saturday 24 October 2026 (return to Paris by plane from Athens).
